About Us

(Aug. 11, 2008 - Nashville, TN) - The Community Health Initiative (CHI) was born of the Church Of God In Christ (COGIC) with the mission to improve the overall health, spiritual well-being and wellness of COGIC members as well as other African-American faith-based churches. CHI has launched its newest project to raise health awareness in the African-American community. The Heartbeat is a quarterly publication that focuses on providing health tips, exploring rising health issues and providing a platform to discuss developing and maintaining more healthy lifestyles.

The Heartbeat has a strong base of support with over 300,000 members, of the Church Of God In Christ denomination. These members are currently enrolled in the DrugPlace program or are involved in current CHI events. The Heartbeat is also available to the general public for an annual subscription of $12. “We are very excited about this project, “ says Debbie Leight, director of communications for DrugPlace. “The publication brings together all the work that we are doing at the Community Health Initiative and DrugPlace. It provides one vehicle to inform our readers - specifically our large COGIC base of whom we work very closely with through many programs-of all the important issues that we champion.”

Each edition of The Heartbeat will focus on one disease state. Realizing that the African-American community is hit or affected more than others by life-threatening illnesses, The Heartbeat hopes to bring a voice to the silent diseases that put many at risk. It will also provide great recipes, exercise tips and much more.
